【Summary Description】 Xilai Gao’s African Swine Fever Prevention (Part 2): Eliminating Ticks—A Crucial Step in Cutting Off Transmission Routes. The role of vector organisms in the spread of African swine fever cannot be underestimated. Among them, the soft tick, Ornithodoros moubata, is an extremely important natural and reservoir host for the African swine fever virus. Recently, at the 2018 China Swine Industry Summit and the New牧Net Annual Conference of Nongcaibadian, Professor Wang Yabiao from South China Agricultural University shared insights on the role of Ornithodoros moubata in the transmission of African swine fever outbreaks, as well as practical knowledge on pest control in pig farms.

Tick Control Measures to Interrupt Transmission Routes

The role of vector organisms in the spread of African swine fever cannot be underestimated. Among them, the soft tick *Ornithodoros moubata* is an extremely important natural and reservoir host for the African swine fever virus. Recently, in... At the 2018 China Swine Industry Forum and the New牧网 Annual Conference of Nongcai Bao Dian, Professor Weng Yabiao from South China Agricultural University gave a presentation on the role of the brown ear tick in the transmission of African swine fever and provided insights into pest control measures for pig farms.

Faced with the African swine fever epidemic, pigs have become unusually vulnerable. However, since the African swine fever virus has numerous transmission vectors, how should pig farms effectively implement biosecurity measures, and what aspects should they pay particular attention to? On December 15, 2018, the “Reformers and Disruptors” 2018 China Swine Industry Forum and the annual conference of Nongcai Baidian and Xinmu.com—hosted by the Southern Media Group and organized by Southern Rural News, Nongcai Baidian, and Xinmu.com—were grandly held at the Hua Ju Junyue Hotel in Guangzhou. At the conference, Professor Wang Yabiao from South China Agricultural University delivered a presentation on the role of the brown ear tick in the transmission of African swine fever and shared valuable insights into pest control strategies for pig farms.

Among the transmission routes of African swine fever, the disease can spread directly through contact between healthy pigs and infected pigs or pigs that are asymptomatic carriers. In addition, it is known that contaminated water, pork and pork products, blood products, contaminated feed, swill, bedding materials, equipment, and even short-range aerosols can also serve as vectors for transmission. However, among these numerous transmission vectors, Wong Yabiao emphasized that vector organisms play a role that cannot be overlooked in the spread of African swine fever. Among them, the soft tick—specifically the Hyalomma marginatum—is an extremely important natural and reservoir host for the African swine fever virus, and its role in the prevention and control of the disease should not be ignored.

The blunt-edged tick, commonly known as the grass tick, wall louse, or flat louse, is a type of soft tick. The blunt-edged tick is a polyhost parasitic species. Currently, at least—has been internationally confirmed. Nine species of soft ticks can infect and transmit the African swine fever virus. Meanwhile, in most regions worldwide where African swine fever has occurred, soft ticks—known as biological vectors of this virus—have already been detected.

The African swine fever virus can replicate within soft ticks and persist for months or even years. When infected ticks bite pigs, they transmit the virus. Once soft ticks become infected, they remain infectious. ASFV can easily lead to the formation of natural foci of infection in the region. Meanwhile, as African swine fever persists through successive generations of ticks, controlling its spread will become a significant challenge. Therefore, the most critical task in current prevention and control efforts is to minimize contact between ticks and African swine fever.

Product Features

1 Emulsification process

Xilai ·Mite Clean—12.5% Dicofol Solution

Utilizing a unique emulsification process that combines nonionic and anionic surfactants, this product exhibits high emulsion stability, excellent dispersibility, and exceptionally strong adhesion and penetration. It delivers remarkable efficacy. Specifically effective against scabies mites, the formulation can adhere to and penetrate the scabrous crusts, allowing the active ingredients to reach and destroy both the mite burrows and tunnels. It effectively repels and kills both adult mites and larvae.

2 Sustained-release technology

Xilai ·Mite Clean—12.5% Dicofol Solution

Utilizing the latest hydrophilic colloidal sustained-release technology, this formulation ensures more stable emulsification, increased viscosity, and long-lasting efficacy, thereby effectively preventing recurrent infections. Spraying the solution onto pens, housing facilities, equipment, tools, vehicles, and newly acquired pigs can help prevent re-infection.

3 Broad-spectrum and highly effective

Xilai ·Mite Clean—12.5% Dicofol Solution

This product has a broad-spectrum insecticidal effect and exerts multiple modes of action, including contact killing, feeding deterrence, repellency, stomach toxicity, and systemic absorption. It also features a unique spreading action: it can spread across the surface of an animal’s skin and penetrate into areas that have not been directly sprayed with the formulation, making it effective against ectoparasites such as various mites, ticks, lice, fleas, mosquitoes, and flies.

4 High security

Xilai ·MiteClear 12.5% Dicofol Solution

It can be recommended for pigs of all ages, including young piglets and pregnant sows; it degrades rapidly in soil.

Xilai ·Mite Clean—12.5% Dicofol Solution Product Usage Instructions and Precautions :

1. Surface treatment for tick and mite control and disinfection :

Dilute with clean water at a ratio of 1:200 to 250, and thoroughly spray all pigs across the entire farm, ensuring they are completely soaked—especially areas such as the ears.

“This product is low-irritant, safe, and highly effective; it can be used simultaneously on pregnant sows.”

1. Pregnant sows awaiting farrowing are moved to the lactation housing, where the facilities are disinfected and treated to eliminate external parasites such as soft ticks and mites.

2. For piglets experiencing skin problems such as dermatitis caused by staphylococci, spray them or immerse them in the solution for 1 to 2 seconds, and repeat the treatment once more after 3 days to easily resolve these surface issues.

Product usage cost :

Dimefox 1 liter per bottle—after dilution, it can be used to spray 150–180 sows (2 kg of diluted solution per sow). The cost per sow is only 1.2 yuan, and it needs to be used just 2–3 times a year.

II. Methods for Environmental Disinfection and Tick Control, as well as Mosquito and Fly Repellent and Elimination :

Dilute at a ratio of 1:500, and carry out full-site disinfection as well as extermination of ticks in the surrounding environment every approximately 7 days.

Efficacy Eliminates ticks, mites, and parasites in the environment—flies and mosquitoes no longer breed in pig farms!

Precautions :

This product is highly toxic to fish and shrimp; do not allow any residual liquid to enter ponds.
